A songwriting workspace for Google Docs

Lyric Lab is a Google Docs add-on built for the messy part of songwriting — the rewrites, alternate lines, almost-right ideas, and versions you don’t want to lose.

Instead of copying verses into separate documents, cluttering your lyric sheet with discarded lines, or trying to remember which version you liked better, Lyric Lab keeps those ideas connected to the lyric where they belong.

Lyric Lab is currently in private testing.

I’m using it in real songwriting sessions and inviting a small group of songwriters to help test it before a wider release.

What Lyric Lab Does

Alt. Lyrics
Save alternate words, lines, or lyric sections and switch between them without losing previous ideas.

Rewrite
Flag lyrics that need another pass and keep track of why — whether they’re too generic, need a stronger image, have a story problem, aren’t singing well, or just aren’t there yet.

Repetition Tracking
Connect two places in a song that repeat the same word, image, or idea so you can decide whether the repetition is helping or hurting.

Snapshots
Save checkpoints of your Lyric Lab workspace so you can experiment without losing the version you liked before the rewrite started.

Boneyard
Keep discarded lyric ideas available instead of deleting something today that you wish you had back tomorrow.

Song Map
Give each section a job and keep the song pointed toward its central North Star — the core idea or emotional truth the whole song is trying to deliver.

Rhyme Map
See rhyme relationships across the lyric and spot patterns that may be difficult to notice while you’re writing.

Song Health
Get a songwriting-focused overview of areas worth another look without asking software to write the song for you.

Built to Stay Out of the Way

Lyric Lab isn’t meant to replace Google Docs or change the way you write.

Your lyric stays your lyric.

Lyric Lab sits alongside it as a workspace for the decisions that happen around the lyric — alternatives, rewrites, structure, rhyme, discarded ideas, and checkpoints.

The goal is simple:

Keep the song clean. Keep every idea.

Currently in Testing

Lyric Lab is still being tested and refined before its public release.

If you’re a songwriter who regularly writes or rewrites songs in Google Docs and would like to help test it, you can request early access.

Testers may encounter bugs or unfinished behavior. Feedback about what works, what doesn’t, and what would make Lyric Lab more useful in an actual writing session is extremely valuable.

Participation is optional, and requesting access does not guarantee immediate acceptance while testing capacity is limited.

Your Songs Stay Yours

Lyric Lab accesses the Google document in which you’re actively using the add-on so it can perform the features you request.

Your lyrics remain your creative work.

Lyric Lab does not sell your lyrics or Google user data, use your songwriting for advertising, or provide your songs to data brokers.

Lyric Lab’s use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
